20 Reasons for Physical Activity
It does not seem like we should need a reason to encourage our children to be physically active. But, we are all too painfully aware of the reality. Our children are getting fatter and fatter, even as we talk more and more about the problem of obesity. There have been many studies, lots of media attention, and some programs that try to address the problem. But, not much progress has been made. Scientific evidence indicates that regular physical activity:1. helps to prevent disease2. promotes a sense of well being and self-esteem3. aids in fighting obesity4. promotes lifelong physical fitness5. improves bone density6. lowers blood pressure7. aids academic achievement8. aids in fighting diabetes9. is supported by health and academic organizations10. fosters overall wellness In addition to scientific support for exercise, the social, emotional and developmental benefits include:11. physical activity is fun12. it is also delightful13. it is personally meaningful14. it is a primary source of identity, of who one is15. it offers a refreshing playground, a respite, something to look forward to Physical activity also helps a person develop five fundamental human freedoms:16. the freedom to express17. the freedom to explore18. the freedom to discover19. the freedom to invent20. the freedom to create One of the greatest things about physical activity and play is they make life more enjoyable, not just longer.
